The Nome Kennel Club was established in 1907 and is still going strong to this day. As a living piece of history, the club is still able to produce prize money ranging from $15,000 to $20,000 each racing season.

The NKC stayed remarkably active throughout its early years of establishment as it hosted many sled dog races. Nearing the height of World War One the club soon began to wither away and by 1918 there was not as much interest; as the racing circuits in Nome failed to produce as many races.

The club began to resurface in numbers again due to the Serum Run and Leonhard Seppala’s contribution to saving the lives of those in Nome during the Diphtheria outbreak around 1925. Later on down the line, the Nome Kennel Club would soon again fade away until 1973 which marked the first Iditarod Trail Sled Dog race that put dog sled racing back on the map world wide. Soon to follow that race in 1974 the Nome Kennel Club was once again operating and thriving as sled dog racing hit the mainstream again.
