Breed Myth

Most purebred dog breeds are endowed by some kind of Breed Myth that romanticises the breed and its origins. In the case of the Siberian Husky, it is the legend of the Chukchi Sled Dog, represented as a natural, primitive breed that was "kept pure by the Chukchi tribespeople for three thousand years," as though the Chukchi had exactly the same understanding of dog breeding as the A.K.C. and there had never even been any exchange of dogs between Siberian tribes. In the case of the Chinook breed, it is the legend of Arthur Walden and his highly romanticised leader Old Chinook. Almost invariably the Breed Myth in its popular form overstates the case, exaggerates greatly, or promotes absolute untruths about the breed in question.
